Technology Center Analysis

The USPTO divides patent application examination among nine examining technology centers (TCs) and the Central Reexamination Unit (CRU). This page looks at whether the Director's discretionary denial decisions vary across the different Technology Centers.

Field of technology for each Technology Center: TC 1600 (Biotechnology), TC 1700 (Chemical), TC 2100 (Computer Architecture), TC 2400 (Networking/Multiplexing), TC 2600 (Communications), TC 2800 (Semiconductors), TC 2900 (Designs), TC 3600 (eCommerce), TC 3700 (Mechanical Engineering), and TC 3900 (Reexaminations).

Technology Center Analysis: Proceedings vs Outcomes

Left Chart: Shows the total number of individual PROCEEDINGS with Director decisions for each Technology Center.

Right Chart: Shows the number of Technology Center decision OUTCOMES. Technology Center OUTCOMES group related decisions (1) issued on the same day and (2) involving (a) the same patent owner and (b) a patent in the same tech center.

Denial Rate by Technology Center

This chart shows the percentage of "deny" OUTCOMES (successful from Patent Owner perspective) for each Technology Center with sufficient data points (3+ grouped outcomes).

Technology Center Detailed Breakdown

This sortable table provides a complete breakdown of discretionary denial decisions by Technology Center. The "Decisions" columns show individual proceeding counts, while the "Outcomes" columns show outcome counts, grouped as noted above.
